In my classroom, I strive to create a safe and inclusive environment where students can feel respected and heard.
Everyone is more than welcome to share their experiences and their progress in their new language and new country. For me, the LINC program is more than just language instruction; it is a bridge between the language and the practical skills students need to navigate their new lives in Canada.
As a LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) instructor, I find this role incredibly rewarding and believe it’s an effective method for language learning. The LINC program’s approach emphasizes the importance of cultural context in learning, helping students not only master a new language but also adapt to a new culture. I see it as a fantastic way of approaching language learning.
My journey into teaching was inspired by my grandparents, who were both teachers in my small hometown in Brazil. From a young age, I had a passion for English. I would spend hours translating lyrics from bands like The Beatles, Bob Dylan, and The Cure to understand their meanings. This early love for language set the stage for my future career.
One of the educators I appreciate the most, Paulo Freire, had the same approach when he was teaching the most vulnerable sectors of Brazilian society in the early 60's. It is amazing to see the correlation of both approaches, and how effective they are for students who are not only struggling with a new language but also with a new culture.

Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) is a FREE language training program funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)/Government of Canada. LINC is designed to assist immigrants in learning English.

One of my most memorable experiences was a potluck party organized by my students. The event was a vibrant celebration of cultural diversity, with students enthusiastically sharing their food and traditions. This gathering highlighted the program’s strength in bringing people together and celebrating differences.
